Argyll Travel

The best way to appreciate and explore Argyll is by car, and in many areas it is advisable to have an economical 4x4 or a car with a good ground clearance so you can get the most out of your visit.

Train & Rail

There is a train service from Glasgow which travels to Helensburgh and then to Arrochar, additionally there is a train service from Glasgow to Oban via Crianlarich and Dalmally.

There is no direct train service to Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Dunoon or Campbeltown.

Bus & Coach

Argyll is well serviced with bus services. Citylink services run from Glasgow through Argyll stopping at all major towns and villages including Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Tarbert, Campbeltown and services to Oban and the north. The services run several times a day and increase during the visitor season (April - October).

West Coast Motors also operate services locally which include school buses and routes such as Tarbert to Lochgilphead and Skipness to Tarbert, some of the buses take bicycles too but please check which services allow cycles.

Boat & Sailing

It's quite straightforward to sail from the Clyde or Ireland and explore the various parts of Argyll. There are a number of marina's throughout Argyll, the best of which are Portavadie on the Cowal Peninsula and Croabh Haven on the west coast of Argyll.

You may of course want to travel up Loch Fyne, through the Crinan Canal and then explore the western isles of Islay and Mull for example, a great way to spend a number of weeks in the region.

Motorcar & Motorcycle

Argyll's roads in recent years have deteriorated and in some sections can be quite alarming so it is important that if you use a motorcycle and low car to drive with care.

The roads here can be empty most of the time allowing you to relax and enjoy your drive, but also please be aware that many of the places have tractors and blind corners, you should always drive with extreme care through Argyll, that's coming from 10 years experience driving here! There have also been a number of motorcycle fatalities in recent years so once again, please be careful and alert when driving here.

With that advice out of the way Argyll is a beautiful place to enjoy a traffic free drive. You can ferry hop from the mainland across to Arran and then Kintyre or from the central belt to Dunoon and Cowal, or just drive via Loch Lomond and then on to your chosen destination which is one of the most beautiful journeys by car in the UK.
