The Mendelssohn on Mull Festival was founded by the renowned violinist Leonard Friedman in 1988, and takes its name from Mendelssohn’ visit to the Western Isles in the 1820s which inspired him to write his Hebrides Overture. Now well established, this annual festival of classical music attracts considerable critical acclaim and enjoys an international reputation. The event is organised by the Mendelssohn on Mull Trust which aims to provide young professional musicians with opportunities to develop their practical music skill at an advanced level, in an environment which encourages personal and cultural development. Since 2000 the Trust has also developed its presence on Mull with the Mull Children’ String Summer School, the educational outreach activity of the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival.
