Tarbert is a picturesque fishing village known as the gateway to Kintyre as it occupies the small land of entry between east and west loch Tarbert.
The houses, many built by generations of fishing families nestle snuggly around the natural harbour protected from erosian by the dry stone wall that marks its circumference engineered by Thomas Telford.
Tarbert is the last main destination before the Islay Ferry terminal and a popular stopping off point for overnight accommodation before the early ferry to Islay (there is no accommodation or hospitality facilities at or near to Kennacraig).
Fishing has been the main history at Tarbert, a fleet declined now to only a handful of modern vessels due to the decline in the once abundant herring and the introduction of sonar equipment. There are still herring landed here from time to time, although the majority of catch is now shellfish, amazing when you think that prawns used to be thrown back!
With 7 hotels in and near the village, a variety of placed to eat out, a small castle and a number of short walks with views out over Loch Fyne, it's a compact but well serviced village that you can't help but like.
