Oban is the west coast unofficial capital of Argyll, it's largest town and the most popular visitor destination both for local inhabitants in surrounding towns and people from all over the world, its close location to the isles of Mull & Iona also proves popular.
Oban's harbour is picturesque, sheltered by the Isle of Kerrara opposite, it is an often calm area home to the Mull ferry. The high street and vast array of shops stretch north to south and around the bay with much on offer.
With an estimated population of somewhere between 8,000 and 9,000 Oban is a bustling rural town and lies on the main road from Lochgilphead to Fort William. The port was founded in the early 1700s and used by steamers in the 1800s transporting people up and down to Fort William and Glasgow. Today Oban features a small distillery, a number of boat trips and excursions to interesting locations in the region, McCaigs Tower high overlooking the bay and a good golf course.
The road stretching north along the coast is crammed full of hotels and accommodation with simply stunning views day and night out across the water with boats coming and going, this is accompanied by a number of good restaurants including specialist seafood restaurants.
