Built in the 15th Century by Sir Colin Campbell it was further built and enlarged in 1693.
Kilchurn, according to the Historic Scotland website incorporated the first purpose built barracks in Scotland.
Kilchurn Castle sits proudly at the top of Loch Awe and looks as if surrounded by water, its a fantastic castle specimin open during the summer only, and only a short distance from Taynuilt where cannonballs were made at the iron foundry.
You can explore inside the castle to several levels and also some boat trips are offered locally to the castle.
Rating: 4/5 - "one of our favourite castles in Argyll, stunning."
How to get there: Drive to Inveraray and turn off opposite the harbour between the George Hotel and the Woollen Mill (through the archway towards the petrol station). Drive north for around 8 miles along the side of Loch Awe and continue to the junction. Turn left and drive for about 1km before turning left into the Loch Awe car park. The castle is a further 500 metres walk from the car park. Take care in crossing the railway line to the castle.
