The Mull of Kintyre is a beautiful part of Scotland, its the southern most portion of Kintyre stretching southwards below Machrihanish and Campbeltown made famous by Sir Paul McCartneys song Mull Of Kintyre that hit the top of the charts in the very early 80s (possibly late 70s).
At the south-westerly most portion is the Mull Of Kintyre lighthouse, its now automated by used to be manned just like every other lighthouse. It's in quite a remote part of the Mull Of Kintyre and you can drive to around 3 kilometres from the actual lighthouse to a small car park. Some of the road to it is through gates which you can open and close but some of the road is a little rough so a rugged car or 4x4 is recommended.
Once at the small car park you will need to walk downhill in a zig zag fashion until you reach the lighthouse 3km below, and it is not accessible due to locked gates although there are a number of places that offer a good opportunity for photographs.
You can also see the Mull Of Kintyre Chinook Disaster Monument nearby.
You can quite clearly see the coast of Northern Ireland from the Mull Of Kintyre Lighthouse.
