Skipness castle is a 13th Century castle on the north east most part of Kintyre adjacent to the entrance to Loch Fyne.
Skipness is a very small linear hamlet village with a single shop which leads to the castle estate. A small care park at the top and bottom of the 1km road offers parking.
The ruin is a superb example, not all of it of course is ruin, you can go inside the castle walls, into what would be the castle keep and also to the roof which presents simply breathtaking and panoramic views of the area which includes across to Arran.
Skipness castle is completely free to enter, the site is available to the public all year round on this privately owned estate.
Rating: 3/5
How to get there: Drive in any direction to Skipness and through the village. You can then either park at the small car park at the top and walk the 1km to the castle, or alternatively if you are disabled, old or have mobility difficulties turn right opposite the car park (just after the church on your left and over the small bridge) and drive to the small car park at the foot of the castle.
