Dunaverty Rock

Today you'll need a golf club if you visit Dunaverty at Southend, as the area surrounding Dunaverty Rock is Dunaverty Golf Course, and a good one at that offering fantastic links challenge!

Dunaverty Rock though was here long before the golf course, and juts out into the Southend scenery dominating the curve of the beach below.

Once upon a time, Dunaverty Castle stood on the rock, a stronghold owned and protected by the MacDonalds until around 1647 when 300 were killed in a violent slaughter under General Leslie.

Dunaverty Rock is also known as Blood Rock for this very reason.
